Dee started his formal martial arts training later in life in 2008. Though he had some training in Tae Kwon Do and Aikido in his teens and twenties, it wasn't until he discovered traditional Japanese Budoshin Ju Jitsu that he began studying in earnest.

Dee's martial arts studies commenced with Sensei Mark Jordan at the Harvard-Westlake dojo and continued under both Mark and Sensei Steve Castorena when they formed the San Fernando Valley Martial Arts Studio. It was here that Dee was awarded the rank of Shodan (Black belt) from Sensei Jordan in 2013. Then he began training in David Bellman's Mushin Ju-Jitsu program and concentrated on what eventually became Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Self-defense at Valley Martial Arts Center with Sensei Castorena in 2015. Dee became Nidan (second degree) in 2015. He was awarded Sandan (third degree) in 2023 by Sensei Kirby.
